UK INTER-COUNTIES CROSS COUNTRY

                                                  FEBRUARY 2008

Seven members of Mendip Athletics Club represented the Avon & Somerset team
at the UK Inter-Counties championships held at Nottingham on March 15th. Two
of the youngsters ran in the under 13 girls race, with Rebecca Carver
matching her showing in December's county championships by finishing third
of the Avon & Somerset girls in 151st place. County champion Ruby Kelly was
perhaps less pleased with her run as she completed in 192nd place while
Kieran Young closed the county team of four in the under 13 boys race as he
finished in 241st place.

Aoife Thorogood, bouyed up by her top ten position at the English Schools
championships the previous week, was out for another good run, this time
against girls a year older than herself. This she managed with a great run
in 29th place. In the under 17 races, county champion Dan Layton struggled
to find his best form as he completed in 79th place, behind two other Avon &
Somerset runners. Rose Penfold found the girls race a tough workout as she
finished in 210th place.

Nathan Young, despite being a bottom-year under 17, was one of several who
moved up an age-group to compete in the under 20 mens race which was being
used as the trial for the World Championships that are being held  this
weekend in Edinburgh. After a steady start Nathan moved through the field in
a confident run, finally finishing in 38th position. In the final race of
the day Whitstone schoolteacher Phil Wylie nearly caused a sensational
upset as he was only overtaken by Wells Harrier Frank Tickner, winner of
last years National Championships, on the run-in to the finish, Phil
crossing the line in 19th position.
