SOMERSET JUNIOR SCHOOLS XC CHAMPIONSHIPS ( YEARS3/4 and 5/6 )

Last Wednesday saw over two hundred and fifty junior school children from
across Somerset compete for their area leagues in the annual end of season
Inter-Area cross country match. This years event was held at St Michael's
Hill near Montacute and saw teams from Mendip, Langport, Yeovil, West
Somerset and Taunton compete in four races for Years 3/4 boys and girls and
Year 5/6 boys and girls.
The opening race saw Mendip's Polly Savage (Upton Noble school) win by a
large twenty second margin from Amy D'Arcy (Yeovil), and Louise Cowling
(Langport). Second in for the Mendip team was Lucy Baldwin (Chewton Mendip)
in 6th, with Maria Osbourne (Chewton Mendip) 9th, Lilly Clothier (Chewton
Mendip) 11th and Andrea Mena (St Joseph & St Teresa) 15th. With Yeovil area
packing well, Mendip were edged out into second place in the team event that
was decided over the aggregate finishing positions of the top ten runners,
with Yeovil scoring 128 points to Mendip's 149.
Westbury-sub-Mendip youngster Shaun Bateman (St Lawrences) continued his
winning streak with a comfortable five second victory over Taunton's Harry
Felgate in the year 3 and 4 boys race, with Yeovil's Sam Squires just edging
out Mendip's Matthew Knight (Springmead Prep) for third. Joseph Engledow (St
Joseph & St Teresa) was the first of the year 3's with an excellent sixth
place overall. Mendip packed well to take the team medals, beating Yeovil
133 points to 190, with Langport close behind on 222.
Probably the best run of the day came from Taunton's Isobel Glaisher who
stretched her lead in the two lap year 5 and 6 girls event to a minute by
the finish from teammate Layla Felgate. Mendip champion Abigail Gibbons (St
Pauls) was first in for the Mendip team in 5th place, just ahead of Daniella
Whiting (Springmead Prep). The mid-pack runners from Mendip packed well, led
in by Mucy Mager (Hugh Sexey) Ella-Rose Bazley Jackson (St Aldhelms) and
Ollivia Allin (West Pennard), and succeeded in taking the team trophy from
Yeovil area 153 points to 167.
Hugh Sexey pair Oliver Fox and Charlie Beake finished first and second in
the year 5 and 6 boys race. Langport's Jamil Carse was the first year five
boy in an excellent third place. With Dan Reason (Hugh Sexey) in seventh and
the main team effort headed by Jamie Portesford (Hugh Sexey), Kieran Davies
(Hugh Sexey), Shane Williams (St Pauls), James Williams (Oakhill) and Mark
Bailey (Croscombe) who filled positions 10 through 14, Mendip were clear
team winners, scoring 109 points to Yeovil's 181.
