(12th January report)
South West Cross Country Champs
Seventeen members of Mendip Athletics Club turned out for the South West Cross Country Championships at Bicton College on January 4th. While the highlight of the day was the Mendip under 15 girls stunning victory in the club competition, a number of youngsters also helped Somerset to take victory in the Inter-County event in the under 13 girls, under 13 boys and under 15 boys events.
The opening race of the day saw four under 13 girls from the club turn out on the ahdn, bumpy course that too in two testing climbs on each of two small laps. Rebecca Carver once again had to contend with several of her local rivals at the head of the leading pack. On this occasion Rebecca struggled to hold the lead runners but held on well to finish in a great 7th place overall. Sister Hayley ran well in the middle of the pack, completing the guelling course in 42nd place, eight ahead of Erin Martin. Mendip's last runner, Agnes Dromgoole, found one of the many pot-holes on the course and was forced to retire with an injured ankle.
Shane Williams was the only under 13 boy to compete. After a wild opening quarter mile - that saw Shane lead the charge to the first corner - sanity prevailed and Shane ran well in the latter stages to finish a creditable 48th place.
Aoife Thorogood set off in determined mood and held a position at the head of the leading group of six runners into the second lap of the under 15 girls race. As the runners climbed the first of the two hills on their second circuit, Aoife was unable to stay with the pace and a small gap opened. Despite having to chase for the remainder of the race, Aoife was never challenged for fourth. Adele Martin once again used a steady start to help launch a strong second half to finish a great 16th place to set-up the club's team victory. Emily Derrick was third in for the club in 30th place, pushing on after running in the early stages with Ruby Kelly who completed in a solid 41st.
Ashley Martin ran well to finish the under 15 boys race in 38th place, getting away from Kieran Young by mid-race to finish 9 places ahead. Blake Parkinson was a similar distance behind in 56th. The under 17 men's race produced the club's only individual medal winner, though Nathan Young always looked as though he was destined for third as a Pair of Poole athletes raced each other to a convincing 1-2. Tom Derrick ran steadily to finish 42nd.
In the senior races, Rose Penfold ran a solid race to finish 44th, while Rob Martin quickly got away from Ian Humphreys as the pair finished 98th and 100th.
